What exactly is a facelift in Orange County?
As we age, skin on our faces may start to sag, leading to jowls and nasolabial folds, or excess skin.
In facelift surgery, excess skin is excised, keeping scars hidden behind your ear and upper neck. The
underlying fascial layer of the face, called the SMAS, is lifted or tightened underneath, to give long
lasting, natural results that still look like you-- only more refreshed.
Does a facelift stop the aging process?
Facelifts do not stop the aging process, but facelifts can set back the clock on aging. We all continue to
age as time passes, but a reset and refresh on your facial appearance can last for many years.
It should also be noted that facelifts will not rejuvenate the brow, eyelids, nose, and some
of the midface. Patients who want to improve these areas may consider combining a facelift
with a brow lift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
Should I get a facelift?
If you are concerned about excess skin of the lower half of your face, deep nasolabial folds, jowls or excess neck
skin, a facelift may be the right option for you. It should be noted that facelift surgery does not address the forehead
or brow, nor excess skin around the eyes, which can be addressed by other procedures at the same time or at a separate
What is recovery from a facelift like?
When you wake up from surgery, you will have bandages around your face and head. You may notice temporary numbness
of areas of your face from local anesthetic. It is not uncommon to experience bruising and swelling that will take weeks
to improve. Small temporary drains will be placed, exiting behind your ears, to help with any expected postoperative oozing,
and will be removed in clinic, usually within a week after surgery.
What exactly is a neck lift in Orange County?
A neck lift is somewhat similar to a facelift, usually with more dissection onto your neck so that skin can be further
tightened for a natural appearing result. An additional scar is sometimes hiddin in the crease between your neck and chin.
In some cases, a neck lift can involve direct excision of skin of the neck and sutures to tighten the muscles that cause
vertical bands on the neck (these lines on the neck, which may bother you preoperatively, are also known as plastysmal banding).
If you are concerned about excess fat in your neck, sometimes neck liposuction with or without a neck lift may be an option for you.
What is a single incision mini neck lift?
For some patients with excess skin or fat limited to the front of the neck, a mini neck lift can be performed. This involves
liposuction of the neck to remove fat, as well as contouring of the neck muscles by tightening one of the broad muscles in the front
of the neck, called the platysma, with sutures. A single temporary drain is placed. The scar is hidden in the crease underneath the
What is eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty in Orange County?
In bleparoplasty surgery, excess skin of the upper and/or lower lids is excised, with scars hidden in natural creases near the
eye. Oftentimes, when your main concern regarding your upper eyelids is excess skin, this procedure can be performed awake
under local anesthetic only. In lower eyelid blepharoplasty, fat around or under the eye may be repositioned to help improve
under-eye circles and smooth the tear trough, or the junction between the lower lid and the cheek. Postoperative bruising
and swelling for a few weeks is not uncommon, and can be camouflaged with make up.
What is Asian blepharoplasty?
Some Asians prefer a double upper eyelid crease. This may include an infold-type or outfold-type upper eyelid crease and a medial
epicanthal fold, or the eyelid fold closer to the nose. This can be done under local anesthetic only and the desired eyelid shape
and crease is made with the patient's preferences taken into consideration at every step.
What types of cosmetic ear surgeries are common?
Some patients are bothered by earring piercing holes that have stretched or torn with time, or are concerned about large ear lobes.
A small procedure under local anesthetic alone can be performed to recontour the ear and to close or narrow holes, or to reduce
the size of the ear lobe with minimal scarring. There is minimal to no downtime. You may re-pierce your ear as soon as 4-6 weeks
after surgery, if desired.
What types of cosmetic jaw or chin surgery can be performed? What are chin implants?
Improving the appearance of the jaw may include nonsurgical or surgical methods. Botox or Jeuveau or Dysport (neuromodulators) can be
injected into the chin to help with cobblestoning or dimpling. Fillers can be placed to help with jaw definition
or volume. From a surgical perspective, through an incision in the inside of the mouth, a chin implant can be placed
to give more jaw definition. Dr. Ng can discuss all of these options with you in her Orange County office.
