What is breast augmentation in Orange County?
Augmentation mammaplasty (breast enlargement) is performed to increase breast size and/or improve breast asymmetry. Candidates for breast augmentation surgery include women who want larger breasts, as well as women who want to restore lost breast volume as a result of pregnancy or significant weight loss.

There are different methods to enlarge breasts. Breasts can be enlarged with implants or by fat transplantation. Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is not a substitute for a breast lift surgery or mastopexy surgery, when Dr. Ng performs surgery to “lift” breasts that sag significantly.

What are the different kinds of breast augmentation surgery in Orange County?
Silicone or saline are the two types of breast implants that are most commonly used in augmentation mammaplasty. Silicone implants feel more like natural breasts than saline ones. However, if a saline implant ruptures, the saline is naturally absorbed by the body, whereas if a silicone implant has an extracapsular rupture (a rupture to the outer capsule), silicone filler leaks into the body, possibly resulting in inflammatory nodules or enlarged lymph glands.

Does Dr. Ng use textured implants or smooth implants?
Allergan, a breast implant manufacturing company, recalled textured implants in July 2019. Dr. Ng has not placed any textured implants in patients to date, but if you are considering removing or replacing textured implants, please book a consultation.

If you are aiming to replace your textured implants due to the recall, Dr. Ng can replace them with smooth implants. If you no longer desire the larger volume of an implant anymore, Dr. Ng can remove your implants and perform a breast lift or mastopexy to restore more youthful-looking breasts.

How are breast implants placed?
Breast implants are placed behind the breast, either underneath the breast tissue itself or under the muscle of the chest wall called the pectoralis major. The procedure lasts 1 to 2 hours, and is typically performed under general anesthesia. The skin incision is usually in the crease on the underside of the breast or around the areola to minimize scar visibility. The breast is then lifted, and Dr. Ng creates a pocket into which the implant is placed.

Should my breast implant be placed behind the muscle or above the muscle?
Advantages of implant placement behind the pectoralis muscle include: a possible reduced risk of capsular contracture (excess scar tissue around implant), and less interference during mammograms. Disadvantages include the possible need for drainage tubes, and a longer recovery period. Advantages of implant placement behind breast tissue include that the breasts move more naturally as the you use your chest muscles, and that slight breast droopiness can be fixed. To discuss which options are best for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ng.

How do I know what size or shape of breast implants to get?
Ultimately, you will make the decision regarding the size of your implants. Implants are not directed by cup size, as with bras. Breast implants are measured by the amount of filling (of saline or silicone) inside the implant. This is measured in cubic centimeters (cc’s). Most breast implants are round, but some breast implants are tear shaped. Profile is the amount of projection that a breast implant has. High profile implants have smaller bases and project outward more, whereas low profile implants project less.

What is the recovery like after breast augmentation?
After breast augmentation, drainage tubes may be inserted. Skin incisions are stitched, taped and bandaged. A surgical bra is typically put over the bandages to minimize swelling and to support the breasts. For a few days after surgery, most patients feel sore, but many return to work within a week. Stitches are usually absorbable. Postoperative pain, swelling and sensitivity improve over the first few weeks. Scars begin to fade in a few months.

What is a combination breast augmentation and lift? What is a mastopexy augmentation?
A breast augmentation with a breast lift, also called as a mastopexy-augmentation, involves enhancing the size and shape of the breasts with breast implants while also removing excess skin and repositioning breast tissue to correct sagging, deflated breasts. This combination technique leaves patients with fuller, perkier breasts. To find out if this is the best option for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ng.

What can I expect in breast implant removal surgery?
The procedure for an explantation of a breast implant is similar to that of an augmentation. There are multiple varieties of this procedure: en bloc, total capsulectomy, or a capsulectomy. The techniques for the surgery could change depending on your reasons for wanting the breast implants removed. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ng about explant surgery at her Orange County office. If the skin has been stretched out or is beginning to sag, then a breast lift procedure may need to be done as well. Once your skin has healed after the explant procedure, Dr. Ng will assess your breasts to see if a lift is needed.

What can I expect in breast implant revision surgery?
The procedure for revising breast implants depends on your reason for wanting implant revision surgery. Please bring your medical records from your previous surgeries to your consultation with Dr. Ng. Dr. Ng may use a variety of techniques to help you achieve the result you desire.

What should I do after breast augmentation surgery or breast implant surgery?
For the first 48 hours, you may apply an ice pack to your surgical areas; 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. Do not apply the ice pack directly onto your skin – use a towel in between. You may shower 48 ours after surgery. It is fine for the Steri-strips to get wet, just pat them dry afterwards. Do not soak in any hot tubs, pools, or ocean.
